Are Hashtags Case Sensitive? #CaseSensitive

A question from a recent workshop was "Are hashtags case sensitive?"
What are hashtags?
Hashtags are used on many social media platforms these days, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. They are a way of grouping together status updates around a particular subject. For example #topic or #business #strawberries.
So, you can add a relevant hashtag to your status update or tweet. It will then become a hyperlink which means that it turns blue. If anyone clicks on that hyperlinked hashtag in your tweet, they will go to a page where all the tweets that have included that hashtag are listed. If anyone clicks on they hyperlinked hashtag in a Facebook status update, they will go to a list of Facebook status updates that have included that hashtag.
If someone types a hashtag followed by that word or phrase into the search bar on Twitter, they will be given a list of all the tweets that have included that hashtag. If someone types a hashtag followed by that word or phrase into the search function in Facebook, it will take them to a list of all the Facebook status updates that have included that hashtag.
If enough people use the same hashtag, it trends. This means that hashtags can raise awareness about a particular event or something in the news.
Can you capitalise the first letter of each word in a hashtag?
Personally, if I'm going to use a hashtag that has more than one word, I capitalise the first letter of each word. That way it is easier for the user to read. #SocialMediaTips rather than #socialmediatips. It still hyperlinks the entire hashtag.
So hashtags are not case sensitive.
Can you use spaces in a hashtag?
No! If you do, the hashtag will be hyperlinked only to the first word. #Social Media Tips. Only #Social will be hyperlinked to other content that has used the hashtag Social.
So hashtags are not case sensitive but you should not put a space between two words.
Can you capitalise the whole hashtag?
According to this article, it is ok to use all uppercase characters on Twitter. Having said that, I would not do it for two words or a phrase as it becomes unclear again. So #SOCIAL or #RUMPUS if you want your hashtag to really stand out. Or even #SocialMediaTIPS if you want to highlight a particular word within that hashtag.
How many hashtags should you use?
We've all seen people on Facebook and Twitter who have about 10 hashtags on any tweet or status update. To me this dilutes the whole goal. For example, I saw a florist who added several hashtags to her image, including the words #flower and #leaf. So generic and with no real sales goal in mind.
What's the etiquette for hashtags?
Common usage tends to put hashtag at the end of any tweet or status update not at the beginning.
How can hashtags help with social media for business?
If you hashtag relevant status updates or tweets for your best keywords, they could be found by potential customers searching those keywords. However, you would need to find keywords that were not too competitive. Give us a call on 01702 476517 to find out how Lollipop Local can help to identify these.
