Facebook, they just can't stop fiddling
by Jon Law, on June 8, 2013
People can get quickly annoyed by the changes that Facebook implement, they do seem to like change for the sake of change. Today I noticed a little change that is subtle and is unlikely to cause much fuss amongst users. It's the addition of a floating menu on your personal page. This is what it looks like
Not surprisingly the floating menu follows you down the page as you scroll down the timeline. There are three menu choices on the left - Page, timeline and now. The page name option takes you through to the page you're on but puts you at the top - in effect it's a back to the top link. The timeline option has a drop down menu which offers you the about page, while the now option offers you links to the years that the individual page has included on their timeline. In this case, our very own Jon Law has only included events since 2006 and earlier entries in 1995. You can click on any of these for a quick nose at what he was up to during those years.
On the right hand side of the new menu bar there are status, photo, place and life event options. The first three offer standard Facebook updates as you would expect, with a little more functionality - you can add date, time and place info. The life events option has a drop down with all the usual options - Work & Education, Family & Relationships, Home & Living, Health & Wellbeing, Travel & Experiences. So the dedicated Facebooker is further enabled to add those all important life events to share with friends. You should of course consider who exactly you are sharing this information with and set your FB settings accordingly.
So this time, Facebook is only making life easier for the keen user. I would be amazed if anyone gave much more than a shrug of indifference to these little fiddles. Perhaps the keen user may even enjoy them!
