Where Is iTunes Back Up Stored?

by Jo Shaer, on January 13, 2013

After losing all my contacts in a previous software upgrade on my iPhone 4 and then seeing the instruction to back up before syncing iPhone contacts with Google Contacts prior to transferring them from my iPhone to my new Samsung Galaxy S3, I realised that I didn't actually know how to find where iTunes keeps the backups that it does make.

As usual, it's not easy to find without some help.

Fortunately I found two videos.

Where is iTunes Back Up Stored For PC

When your iPhone is NOT CONNECTED to your computer, you need to go into the iTUnes navigation bar at the top and select Edit. At the bottom, you will find the option Preferences. In the pop up menu that ensues after clicking Preferences, you will see Devices and you will see a list of back ups that iTunes has stored.

At the bottom, you will see a checkbox which stops iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically with iTunes - I so wish I had known about this earlier! If you check this and then OK to save the change, it means that when you log in, iTunes doesn't automatically start syncing. This can be a problem if there has been an error on your phone and you want to restore it to a previous back up as it may take the wrong one.
